Margarethe Swanson Helland

November 28, 1905 - June 23, 2002

Margarethe Swanson Helland, 96, or Virginia died suddenly Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1905, in Iron River, Wis., to Alfred and Olava Swanson. She moved to Virginia with her family in 1917. She graduated from Virginia High School in 1923 and earned her teaching degree in Duluth. She began her teaching career in Kelsey and taught in the Virginia elementary schools for more then 40 ears. In 1968, she married John A. Helland. They enjoyed an active life together, traveling in the U.S. and Norway, hosting family gatherings, and spending vacation time at the their cabin on Lake Vermilion. She was an active member of Our Savior's Luther Church, Sons of Norway and the Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband, John; a niece, Carol (Jim) Deaville, of Ontario, and children Andrew and Christina; two nephews, Philip Swanson of Gloucester, Mass., and daughter, Mariah, and Dr. Grant (Wendy) Swanson of Monterey, Calif.; four stepchildren, Arne (Susan) Helland of Virginia and daughters Anna and Kristin, Lila (Elden) Landvik of Chisholm and children Erik, Kari, Kirsten, Evan and Lisa; Audrey Kohlhase of Virginia and children Brian, Karen, John, Andrea and Karl; and Gladys Helland of Greenwich, Conn.; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Sigurd; and two sisters, Bertha and Pearl.

Margarethe Swanson Helland was a resident of Virginia from 1917 to 2002 and an alumni of Virginia Schools (Class of 1923).
